Shortly after the original series of "Star Trek" was cancelled, his wife Gloria Rand left him and took him to the cleaners. With very little money and acting prospects now, he lived in a truck bed camper until acting bit-parts turned into higher paying roles. An irony considering his huge popularity, and a testament to his perseverance, and a contrast to his later success.
