Until the Brown family arrived last year, it seemed like nothing ever changed in Everwood, a charming little town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Dr. Andrew "Andy" Brown (series star TREAT WILLIAMS) has made the transition from a world-renowned neurosurgeon, whose career overshadowed his parental obligations, to a small-town clinician and attentive but struggling father to bright 10-year-old Delia (series star VIVIEN CARDONE) and troubled 16-year-old Ephram (series star GREGORY SMITH). Plainspoken Edna Harper (series star DEBRA MOONEY) serves as Dr. Brown’s nurse and office manager, despite being the mother of the only other doctor in town, irascible Dr. Harold Abbott (series star TOM AMANDES), whose children, 16-year-old Amy (series star EMILY VanCAMP) and 18-year-old Bright (series star CHRIS PRATT), have become friends with Dr. Brown's at school. Dr. Brown has also found his neighbor, Nina Feeney (series star STEPHANIE NIZNIK), to be a reliable confidante. And the school bus driver, Mr. Irv Harper (series star JOHN BEASLEY), keeps watch over it all.As summer ends, the townspeople continue to cope with their grief over Colin Hart's (former series star MIKE ERWIN) death last spring, and Dr. Brown finds himself and his family unfairly marked as social outcasts because he was unable to save Colin during an extremely intricate brain surgery. Colin's mother, Sharon (recurring guest star NANCY EVERHARD), asks Amy to look through Colin's possessions in preparation for a memorial service at the school, a painful process since Amy loved Colin and deeply resents Dr. Brown's failure. While working together at the town swimming pool, Ephram tentatively tries to comfort Amy by relating his experiences with his mother's death.Meanwhile, with almost no clients, Dr. Brown retreats to the solitude of his office, avoiding contact even with his friends, and recalls the choice he faced while operating on Colin. He could have persisted in the losing battle and attempted a procedure that would have kept Colin alive--with severe brain damage--but he honored the confidential wishes of Colin and his parents not to prolong his life unnaturally. Ephram and Edna individually plead with Dr. Brown to stop acting as if he were guilty, and Nina finally persuades him to go to a new theme restaurant called Planet California with her. But their meal is marred when Amy berates Dr. Brown publicly. She believes that he intentionally let Colin die--a charge that Dr. Brown cannot entirely dispute.At the memorial service, Amy delivers a heartfelt remembrance, and the audience is shocked when Dr. Brown arrives and makes a moving speech about Colin, explaining that he tried his best but could not make a miracle happen this time. Dr. Brown’s neighbor and friend Nina (recurring guest star STEPHANIE NIZNIK) is ostracized by the townspeople when they discover that she is a surrogate mother for a woman in her mid-50s. Dr. Brown's clumsy attempt to come to Nina's defense only makes the situation worse, but she turns to Dr. Brown and Ephram for help when the baby makes an unexpectedly early arrival. Meanwhile, in order to gain the approval of her friends, Amy cancels her party invitation to Ephram. And Delia tries to befriend the school bully, Magilla (BRET LOEHR). When the owner of Everwood’s flower shop dies, Dr. Brown discovers that she was growing marijuana in her backyard to help people who were suffering from cancer. Against Dr. Abbott's wishes, his wife, Rose (recurring guest star MERRILYN GANN), stores the marijuana in their basement until the town decides what to do with it. After much debate, the community decides to burn it. Meanwhile, Dr. Brown's neighbor and friend Nina (recurring guest star STEPHANIE NIZNIK) asks for his advice when a teacher suggests that her son, Sam (recurring guest star RYAN ARMSTRONG), take the therapeutic drug Ritalin. Dr. Brown accompanies Nina to the teacher's meeting and voices his opposition to the idea. But after volunteering to watch Sam for an afternoon, he experiences how unruly Sam really is. Also, Amy and the Harts celebrate Colin's homecoming from the hospital by hosting a party. Colin is overwhelmed and frustrated because he still does not remember most of the people there, including Amy, due to his formerly comatose state.
