Shizuka Arakawa Biography

Shizuka Arakawa is a Japanese figure skater who won the 2004 World Figure Skating Championship. Shizuka is from Sendai in the Tohoku region of Japan. She is currently coached by Tatiana Tarasova. Arakawa's previous coach was Richard Callaghan and she was coached by Yuka Sato's mother, Kumiko Sato at one time. She currently lives and trains in Simsbury, Connecticut.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Waseda University, among the most prestigious of private universities in Japan.

Arakawa landed her first triple-jump when she was eight years old, and competed in the Olympic Games in Nagano in 1998 at the age of 14. However, some feel that her emphasis on academics affected her results in skating.
