He was one of the top recruits entering college play after attending Archbishop Spalding High School. Gay was a McDonald's All-American, and a PARADE First Team All-American in his senior year.
During his sophomore year, he was often regarded as the most talented player in college basketball. He was a co-winner (with Jeff Green of Georgetown University) of the 2005 Big East Conference Rookie of the Year award. Gay was widely regarded as one the top prospects in future for the NBA Draft; he was seen as an early lottery pick if he were to enter the 2006 Draft.
