In the early 1900s, the Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the NL's most dominant teams, powered by super shortstop Honus Wagner. Wagner was to his time what Alex Rodriguez is to the contemporary MLB. The Pirates have won five World Series in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979. The put great teams together in the early 1990s as well, with Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla carrying the load.
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander Jeff Karstens for assignment and claimed right-hander Chris Jakubauskas off waivers from Seattle.
