Maria Sharapova beat Yan Zi and Elena Dementieva defeated Nicole Vaidisova in the quarter-finals of the Watsons Water Champions Challenge in Hong Kong. Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva had quarter-final wins at the Watsons Water Champions Challenge in Hong Kong. Number one seed Maria Sharapova was made to work hard for her 7-5 6-3 victory by China's Yan Zi. The Russian appeared to be winning comfortably after going into a 5-2 lead with two breaks of serve in the first set, however Zi fought back, levelling the set at 5-5 before Sharapova found her range again, converting her third set point to take it 7-5. Number four seed Elena Dementieva was made to work hard for her 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory over 17-year-old Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic. Vaidisova started the match well, a combination of powerful serving and forceful groundstrokes enabling her to win the first five games in the match on the way to taking the first set 6-3. Dementieva played much better tennis in the second set which she won 6-3, her accurate groundstrokes proving too much for Vaidisova. After an exchange of breaks at the start of the third set Dementieva reeled off three games in a row against a tiring Vaidisova to clinch the match.
