The National Baskeball Association's franchise in New Jersey, the Nets were founded in 1967 as part of the ABA. They started as the New Jersey Americans and changed to the New York Nets in 1968. They won two ABA Championships before joining the NBA in 1976. They would take the New Jersey Nets mantle in 1977. In the NBA, their greatest success came in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons, where superstar Jason Kidd
led the team to the NBA Finals in back-to-back years. Other notable players to have played with the Nets include Julius Erving, Drazen Petrovic, Rick Barry, Nate Archibald, Buck Williams, Wendell Ladner, John Williamson and Bill Melchionni.
Owner Bruce Ratner intends to move the Nets to Brooklyn in time for the 2008-2009 season. If it goes through, the Brooklyn Nets will be the first major league sports team to play in Brooklyn since the Brooklyn Dodgers
left for Los Angeles.
