The top offensive player in the Marlins farm system, Miguel reached the majors in June 2003 and provided an instant offensive spark, despite initially playing out of position in left field.

Signed out of Venezuela in 1999, Miguel was an All-Star shortstop in the Single-A Midwest League in 2001. He made the switch to third base in 2002, and had another fine season, leading the Single-A Florida State League with 43 doubles. In 2003, Miguel advanced to Double-A, where he hit .365 with 42 extra-base hits in 69 games before getting the call to Florida.

With his combination of power and speed, Miguel figures to be a force in the middle of the Marlins' lineup.
