[Growing up in Amarillo, JD Souther never wrote anything other than a few exercises for music composition and theory classes at Amarillo College. When he moved to California in the late 1960s, the 22-year-old taught himself to play an acoustic guitar somebody had left at his apartment. At that point, he started writing songs. And the rest is history.
