A football club in the Scottish Premier League, Glasgow-based Celtic F.C. was founded in 1888 by an Irish Marist brother named Brother Walfrid originally from County Sligo. Celtic came to represent Catholicism and is a favorite of many in the Republic of Ireland. They have a fierce rivalry known as the "Old Firm" with crosstown team Rangers F.C. and the clashes between fans the two have had Catholic vs. Protestant overtowns in the past. Celtic won the European Cup in 1967. They won the Scottish league 44 times, first in 1893 and most recently in 2006. Notable Celtic greats include Jimmy McGrory, Bobby Lennox, Henrik Larsson, Stevie Chalmers, Jimmy Quinn, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Danny McGrain and Pat Bonner.
A 0-0 at Hamburger SV left Celtic FC's UEFA Europa League future hanging by a thread but midfielder Barry Robson is not giving in, though he noted: "Luck's been against us in this competition."
