Ellis starred in the acclaimed hit film "Ray," directed by Taylor Hackford. The actress portrays blues singer Mary Ann Fisher, whose long-term love affair with legendary performer Ray Charles, played by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, comes to a memorable end. She also finished filming "Freedomland," with Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore.
Ellis also was in "Undercover Brother," by Malcolm Lee, "The Best Man," a live-action comedy based on Urban Media's popular Website series and earlier starred opposite Cuba Gooding, Jr. in "Men of Honor." Based on a true story, "Men of Honor" features Ellis as Jo, the strong-minded wife to the first African-American Navy diver, Carl Brashear (Gooding).
The actress made her Broadway debut in George C. Wolfe's "The Tempest," which began as a Shakespeare-in-the-Park production. Last spring, Ellis appeared in "Drowning Crow," an update of Chekhov's "The Seagull" with Alfre Woodard, at Broadway's Biltmore Theatre. In this production, Ellis portrayed Hannah Jordan, the innocent little girl caught up in desire, opposite Anthony Mackie.
On television, Ellis portrayed a recurring character on "The Practice," while she has also appeared on "Third Watch," "New York Undercover," "The D.A," and the medical drama "MDs." Sidney Lumet also had Ellis play several guest leads on his A&E show "100 Centre Street."
Ellis studied acting in the graduate drama program at New York University after receiving her bachelor of arts degree in African-American studies from Brown University.
